Recent Developments (October 2023)

1. Mauritania’s Green Hydrogen Ambitions Soar with EU Partnership

October 31, 2023

The European Union (EU) and the Mauritanian government have joined forces to hasten the growth of Mauritania’s green hydrogen industry.

At the Global Gateway Forum in Brussels, this historic partnership was revealed, highlighting the common commitment to promoting green energy and economic prosperity in Mauritania and beyond.

Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, the president of Mauritius, voiced the opinion that widespread production of green hydrogen might spur green economic expansion throughout Europe and Africa.

These initiatives are part of the larger context of the EU’s collaboration with Mauritania concerning governance reforms, green and blue economy transformation, and human development. Between 2021 and 2024, the EU has allocated €578 million to support these goals.

2. ACWA Power’s Staggering $746 Million Agreements Uplift Clean Energy Initiatives

October 30, 2023

A whopping $746 million worth of ground-breaking agreements have been inked by ACWA Power. These ground-breaking agreements, formed in Riyadh during the Future Investment Initiative (FII7), are expected to spark renewable energy and sustainability projects in several areas.

A $500 million deal between ACWA Power and EIG, a renowned institutional investor with a focus on the energy and infrastructure sectors, lies at the heart of these noteworthy events. With a particular emphasis on strategic investments in the Gulf region and Uzbekistan, this partnership is well-positioned to direct projects involving electricity production, water desalination, green hydrogen, and green ammonia.

3. Denmark Awards $155M to Six Green Hydrogen Projects

October 30, 2023

Six green hydrogen projects received a total of DKK 1.25 billion ($155 million) from Denmark in its first call for funding for Power to X (PtX) initiatives. Holstebro, Esbjerg, Padborg, Rybjerg, Rødekro, and Fredericia will be the locations of the projects.

With an award of more than DKK 910 million, European Energy’s Padborg facility will receive the most assistance. Businesses fought to deliver the most affordable pricing per energy produced unit.

PtX is a method that can produce green fuels by using power from renewable energy sources such as solar cells and wind turbines. The production of green fuels from PtX plants is crucial for the decarbonization of sectors such as shipping and aviation.

In 2022, the Danish Parliament adopted an agreement that PtX plants will be built in Denmark with a capacity of 4-6 GW in 2030. This tender has supported six projects that will construct a total capacity of 280 MW.

4. Duke Energy to Build US’s First Green Hydrogen Plant in Florida

October 30, 2023

In Florida, Duke Energy will construct a facility to generate, store, and burn only green hydrogen. This innovative initiative is a big step towards the energy sector’s decarbonization and the advancement of green hydrogen technology adoption.

The project will be housed inside Duke’s current DeBary facilities. It is a partnership between Duke, General Electric’s GE Vernova division, and construction management and consulting firm Sargent and Lundy.

It is anticipated that the DeBary demonstration project will start construction later this year and take around a year to finish. The current 74.5 megawatt (MW) DeBary solar facility will supply clean energy for two 1-MW electrolyzer units as the first component of the new system.

The project will also demonstrate the feasibility of using green hydrogen to power industrial processes and fuel heavy-duty vehicles.

5. CIP and Tenaska Agree Green Hydrogen Partnership

October 27, 2023

A deal has been signed by Tenaska and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) to advance gigawatt-scale green hydrogen project development in the US. This collaboration is a major step towards the country’s energy decarbonization and towards meeting the increasing demand for clean fuels and green hydrogen on a worldwide scale.

The focus of CIP and Tenaska’s joint initiative is the creation of greenfield gigawatt-scale green hydrogen projects that are well-placed to satisfy regional and international demand for green hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, and other clean fuels. This partnership seeks to open the door for a more sustainable and clean energy environment by concentrating on important hydrogen markets in the United States.

The goal of the strategic alliance between CIP and Tenaska is to create 10 million metric tonnes of clean hydrogen per year by 2030, in line with the National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap of the US Department of Energy. This partnership is more than simply an agreement; it is a vital turning point in the country’s transition to more sustainable and clean energy generation.
